Doctor Strange 2: Maybe no release in China
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness couldn't make it to China. The film was originally intended as the first Marvel film since Spider-Man: Far From Home , which should have appeared in the self-proclaimed People's Republic. However, according to current reports, it looks as if the film around Benedikt Cumberbatch is not released on site due to a local social media backlash. A scene at the beginning of the film is discussed in which Doctor Strange is fighting with the antagonist Gargantos in New York. During the fight, among other things, a newspaper snippet can be seen on which Chinese characters are presented.
The newspaper itself, based on the characters, is the "Epoch Times". The magazine, which is often politically classified as right -wing populist, criticizes the China Communist Party massively in many places. In China, the Falun Gong grouping, which is a core of the magazine, is prohibited. In Germany, the group of the group was described in 2005 as that of a new religious sect by the Leipzig Regional Court. The Epoch Times is also represented in Germany and was very popular with Pegida and Co., for example, a few years ago, due to the political orientation mentioned and correspondingly criticized reporting.
no release in China?
The question is to what extent this scene will ultimately act for a lock for the film. Apparently it is not exactly easy to find the magazine in the scene. So far there is no official approval or blocking of the film for the Chinese market. The first part appeared in China and played $ 109 million there.
But since then numerous Marvel films such as Black Widow, Eternals or Venom: Let There be carnage have not been published in China. It is often open why exactly the films were not approved for publication. In the case of Black Widow, for example, it was speculated whether the representation of communism in the film could play a crucial role here.
censorship in other countries
China is currently not the only market in which Marvel is confronted with this type of problems. For example, we recently reported on an apparent ban on the uncensored second part in Saudi Arabia. Accordingly, we can obviously expect such reports for other upcoming Marvel films.
